Families can spend a week in the village of Le Sailhant with a tour at Château du Sailhant, a thousand year old château-fort, located in the mountainous Auvergne region of central France. At an altitude of over three thousand feet, it stands on a dramatic volcanic promontory with one hundred foot perpendicular cliffs on three sides overlooking a mystical seventy-foot waterfall that drops into a prehistoric volcanic crater lake.
Accessible only on one moated side, the site has been occupied from the most remote of times.
Guests will have the opportunity for guidance and historical reference regarding the region, as well as a complimentary tour of the chateau with its fabulous history, its French kitchen, two 14th century Gothic rooms, two 16th century Renaissance rooms, and a tower from the ninth century. On site you can swim in a volcanic lake with a magnificent cascade. In the nearby region you can hike the Auvergne volcanoes, hunt wild boar, ride horses and ski and ice skate at a renowned center.
Château du Sailhant is 10 kilometers from medieval Saint-Flour, a historic and picturesque hill town of 3,000 people, with marvelous shops, a Gothic cathedral, museums and a classic market on Saturday. There are numerous nearby chateaux open to the public. The Auvergne region is famous for its cheeses, charcuterie, cooking, volcanic mountains, rustic countryside, stone villages, Romanesque churches, black Christs and Virgins, and mystical legends. Just one hour away, the lovely city of Clermont-Ferrand has cathedrals, museums, great antiquing and an international airport.
